vatican. >> there's never been a bishop of rome emeritus for 719 years. i think he will make that work because he will simply retire into the deep background and not be seen in public. >> reporter: event wally he will live in this renovated monetary in vatican city, physically close to the new pope, but no one expects him to be intrusive. >> the new pope may come in and seek his advice. >> he'll be remembered as the pope who resigned, without a doubt. and i think it may be his finest legacy to the church, his greatest gift to the church because really he's brought the papacy into the modern age. >> reporter: currently the conclave to choose the successor to benedict xvi is scheduled to begin between march 15 and march 20 but there's talk that day could be moved up because the cardinals who will vote on his successor are all scheduled to be here to say good-bye to the pope on february 28th.

i'm anne thompson in rome. one of those with a vote is roger mahoney, the former bishop of los angeles. he's expected in court. he's facing a deposition of accusations he maneuvered behind the scenes to protect accused priests and to protect the church. despite those accusations and being removed as archbishop in l.a. he still remains a cardinal in the church and that qualifies him to cast a vote in selecting the next pope. critics are calling on mahoney to remove himself from voting. but cardinal law faced the same and still cast a vote in the election of pope benedict. >> varying opinions on who should be the next pope. the new leader will be in place in two weeks. today in downtown san jose many said they're sad to see the pope step down. they praise him for the work he's done but understand why he's retiring. some say they're looking for the church to go in a new direction. >> i think that it's good that he decided to resign if he feels

that he's aging enough that he can't be in control of the church and the decisions, and perhaps it's time to put someone in who is significantly younger and has a heartbeat of the younger generation in the catholic church and what might matter to them going forward. >> some expressed the desire to have a woman or minority pope. all those we talked to say they want someone with progressive views. two men are still in the hospital after their speedboat crashed into a ferry yesterday afternoon. the front end of the 22-foot speedboat was damaged in the crash in an area known as raccoon straight near angel island at 4:00. the golden gate ferry involved was heading to sausalito at the time. officials took it out of service and the crew was placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues, which is standard procedure. the crew told the "san francisco chronicle" that it expected to interview the men today and release the results of its investigation by the end of the

week. no one on the ferry was hurt. police are searching for a man after similar reports of an attack in the mission district. then on february 2nd another between bartlett. stephanie chuang is live with the latest. the most bizarre part is the motive. >> that's right. they're still trying to figure out what the motive is. they say it doesn't look like either sexual assault nor robbery was the motive in this situation. now, the most recent of the two attacks which happened about a month and half mile apart from one another was here long bartlett between 22nd and 23rd. police say a man attacked a woman around 1:00 in the morning. let's take a look at the sketch that police have just released of this man. police say he punched the woman several times. she tried to cover her face with her hands, then he ran away. now, back on january 6th before 3:00 early sunday morning, special victims unit investigators believe the same

man lunged at another woman, threw her to the ground, straddled her and slammed her head into the pavement several times, then only ran off when she screamed for help. again, they just released the sketch of this man. they don't know what the motive is. about a month apart for each of these attacks. we did speak with some women both on and off camera who are around the mish mission district. we'll hear from them coming up tonight at 6:00. for now live in the mission district in san francisco, stephanie chuang, nbc bay area news. thousands march for action on global warming in san francisco today. >> we want action now. >> about 5,000 people from across the bay area in northern california rallied in march near market plaza. the event was designed to coordinate with a 40,000-strong rally in washington, d.c., and others being held in major cities across america. organizers say it's important to put a face on the movement and a

two well-known california politicians were on "meet the press" today. lieutenant governor gavin newsom and business executive and former california republican candidate for u.s. senate carly fiorina squared off in the roundtable part of the program inspect. they traded accusations from the economy to the dysfunction in washington. >> it's time for us to lean in again and hold these guys up to a higher level of expectation. you want to move the mouse, you got to move the cheese. we've got to change incentives in this country for good behavior not the kind we're seeing. >> i find it stunning, truly that this president and the democratic party continue to lay all the blame for their failure to achieve anything at the feet of the tea party or ted cruz or whoever the latest villain is. >> also every time newsome appears on "meet the press," it renews speculation that his still has his sights set on washington down the road of his political career. president obama's chief of staff confirms that the white

house has been working on its own immigration reform plan. republicans are pushing back hard and say they're waiting to see what a bipartisan group of lawmakers will be offering in the next few weeks. bryan mooar has the story from washington. >> reporter: immigration reform is one of the very few issues that unites both republicans and democrats. while eight senators are finishing up a bipartisan bill, "usa today" reveals the white house has been working on a backup plan if the current efforts fall apart. >> if those do not work out, then we'll have an option ready to put out there. >> reporter: president obama's chief of staff said it would include a path to citizenship for this nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants. republicans say any plan with the president's name on it is bound to fail. >> of course it will. and that's why we are working together, republicans and democrats. by the way, he's had no communications with republicans on the issue, unlike the previous four presidents that i've dealt with.

history was made in nascar today as danica patrick became the first woman to qualify in the top spot. you got to like that. earning the pole position for the daytona 500 is the biggest achievement of patrick's career. the 30-year-old woman raced the speedway averaging you know about 196 miles per hour in 46 seconds, not bad. only four-time champion and vallejo native jeff gordon even came close to knocking her off. no woman had ever qualified higher than ninth. patrick looks to be the first woman to win a race when the

clouds this time tomorrow. some of that will be due to the sea breeze which will push in low clouds tonight, also a storm system up the coast will drop our way and we'll see a big time drop in temperatures. the system we're watching is approaching the pacific northwest. this is part of the big pattern change that's going to bring in that drop of cold air. this time tomorrow night in to tuesday will be the main event of this weather change. that's going to bring us some rain. that's not so unusual this time of year or seeing some breezy conditions, 15 to 30 miles per hour. but here's some of the other headliners, as we see that cold air spill in, snow will be possible 2,000 to 3,000 feet. only near 50. you have chilly air moving into the bay area. that will be a possibility. higher peaks like mount diablo, you might see that in addition to the cold air sweeps in, that will increase the instability and the atmosphere, especially around the coast where they have warmer water underneath that colder air aloft could get some thunder or at least small hail

at times. all this rolling in for tuesday before things start to calm down heading into wednesday. hour by hour, the forecast going into tomorrow, notice mostly cloudy skies. tuesday morning's commute, plan a little extra time. fairly dry weather of late. rain on the road may make things extra slick as oil builds up on the roadways. tuesday morning to tuesday night. then by wednesday morning things do start to calm down. we should see about a quarter inch to half inch of rain for most of the bay area. all this as it heads out to the sierra means we should see a foot of snow and probably more than that by the time we get into wednesday morning. lows in the 40s around the bay area. patches of fog and low clouds. highs tomorrow down into the 50s. the holiday weekend started off with 70s. you can see the cooling taking place. upper 50s, close to 60 in pleasanton. up towards the north bay. with increasing clouds, decreasing temperatures heading on to tuesday.

look at the high temperatures near 50 in livermore. tuesday the main event for our weather, wednesday morning now we're thinking should be a dry commute. temperatures staying cool. here is another change. we're starting to see thursday to friday still expecting some showers. but most of those now looking to stay north of the golden gate. those next two systems weaker than the one we'll see coming in here on tuesday. better chance for the north bay thursday to friday and probably into parts of saturday. the main event take your pick. everything the weather can throw at you, it's going to be rolling in for 24 hours, but great news for the sierra. you'll see at least a foot of snow and maybe mount hamilton when you wake up wednesday morning a coating of snow. >> sounds beautiful. >> let's bring in henry from comcast sports net now. with a look alt sports. >> we've got something good for you today. reports from arizona including the best basketball player on the giants and for the first

welcome back to nbc bay area. it was a magical season for the green and gold a year ago. today marked the team's first full squad workout of the 2013 season. how about heading out to arizona where kate is in the desert with the latest from a's camp? kate? >> well, henry, they opened day

one of workouts with a team meeting. he addressed his players for about 45 minutes, and on hand was also billy bean and lou wolf. melvin even brought in pitching great bob welch to inspire his players. he told me the message was pretty simple. he wanted to congratulate his players on their al west title, but he wanted to encourage them to go for even more this year. >> you take pride in that, that's for sure. and you want to carry that forward, but you also understand that this is a new year and you have to let that go. but once you do let it go, you have to reflect and say, what made us good, what made us last year able to win the west? and those are the things that we as a coaching staff as well need to carry forward and the players need to know and we've discussed that as a group a little bit today, too. >> 2013, we have to go out there and do it again. that's wa we'll worry about. we just got to keep going this
